There are few adventures in the Southwest that feel as surreal as paddle boarding into Antelope Canyon from Lake Powell. Towering sandstone walls rise above calm blue water, reflections dance through narrow canyon passages, and for a few hours, you get to experience one of Arizona’s most famous landscapes from an entirely different perspective.

Unlike the crowded walking tours through Upper or Lower Antelope Canyon, this self-guided paddle route gives you a quieter, more adventurous experience — especially if you start early.

Where to Launch Your Paddle Board

The main access point for the self-guided paddle is the Antelope Point Launch Ramp near Page, Arizona. The launch sits inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on Lake Powell.

Driving Directions

From Page, Arizona:

  • Take Highway 98 east

  • Turn onto Navajo Route N22B

  • Follow signs for Antelope Point Marina and Launch Ramp

  • Continue to the public launch area

The drive from downtown Page takes about 15–20 minutes.

Parking Information

There is a large public parking lot at the Antelope Point Launch Ramp. Most paddlers unload their paddle boards near the bottom of the ramp, then move their vehicle back to the upper parking area before launching.

Keep in mind:

  • A Glen Canyon National Recreation Area entrance fee is required unless you have an America the Beautiful pass

  • Water levels fluctuate throughout the year

  • Depending on lake levels, you may need to carry your board down a rocky path to the shoreline

Best Time to Go (And Why Early Morning Matters)

The single best tip for this trip: launch as early as possible.

Most experienced paddlers recommend getting on the water between sunrise and 7:30 a.m. to avoid:

  • Strong afternoon winds

  • Heavy boat traffic

  • Choppy wake conditions

  • Tour group crowds

Morning conditions on Lake Powell are usually calmer, quieter, and dramatically more beautiful. The canyon walls glow with soft orange light, and the reflections on the water are incredible.

By late morning and afternoon, wind can build quickly and make the paddle back much more difficult — especially for beginner paddlers. Multiple paddlers report that afternoon wind on Lake Powell can become dangerous surprisingly fast.

Ideal Seasonal Timing

The best months are typically:

  • April–May

  • September–October

These seasons usually offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds than peak summer.

How Long Is the Paddle?

The paddle into Antelope Canyon is roughly:

  • 2.5 miles one way

  • About 5 miles round trip

Most people spend:

  • 3–5 hours total

  • Longer if hiking deeper into the canyon

The first portion crosses open water near the marina before entering the narrow canyon section. Once inside Antelope Canyon, the water usually becomes calmer and more protected from wake.

At the end of the paddleable section, you can pull your board ashore and continue hiking farther into the slot canyon depending on current water levels.

What the Paddle Is Like

This is not a lazy floating trip — but it is manageable for most people with basic paddle boarding or kayaking experience.

Expect:

  • Open-water paddling at the beginning

  • Occasional boat wake

  • Narrow sandstone canyon passages

  • Small beach pull-outs

  • Optional hiking through mud, sand, and shallow water

The scenery changes constantly. Wide lake views slowly transform into twisting canyon corridors with towering red rock walls.

Many paddlers say the experience feels far more peaceful and immersive than the traditional canyon tours.

What to Bring

Essentials

Bring more water than you think you’ll need. The desert heat arrives quickly, even in spring and fall.

Recommended gear:

  • Paddle board or kayak - I got mine at Redline in Mesa, Arizona (mention my name in-store)

  • Coast Guard-approved life jacket

  • Dry bag

  • Plenty of drinking water

  • Sunscreen

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Snacks - we brought sandwiches, cheese sticks and Syncron Elixirs (code SWS20 for 20% off your Amazon order)

  • Water shoes or sandals with grip

  • Phone in waterproof case

  • Lightweight quick-dry clothing

  • Sun hat and sunglasses

  • America the Beautiful Pass (not needed but pass pays for itself in just 2 park visits)

Helpful Extras

  • Small first aid kit

  • Portable pump if using an inflatable SUP

  • Tie-down straps

  • Towel and change of clothes

  • Electrolytes

If you do not own a board, several outfitters in Page rent paddle boards and kayaks.

Safety Tips

Lake Powell conditions can change quickly.

Important things to know:

  • Wind is the biggest hazard

  • Afternoon weather is often rougher

  • Boat wake can create unstable conditions

  • Cell service can be limited in canyon sections

  • Summer heat can exceed 100°F

If conditions become too windy, turn around early rather than pushing deeper into the canyon.

Also remember:

  • Flash flooding is dangerous in slot canyons during storms

  • Always check the weather forecast before launching

Leave No Trace

Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell are incredibly fragile desert environments. Keeping them beautiful requires intentional care from every visitor.

Follow Leave No Trace principles:

  • Pack out all trash

  • Do not leave food scraps

  • Stay on durable surfaces when hiking

  • Avoid disturbing wildlife

  • Do not carve or mark canyon walls

  • Respect quiet spaces

  • Use reusable water bottles instead of disposable plastics

The beauty of this experience comes from how wild and untouched the canyon still feels. Leaving it exactly as you found it helps preserve that experience for future paddlers.

Final Thoughts

A self-guided paddle board trip into Antelope Canyon is one of the most unique outdoor adventures in Arizona. Between the towering sandstone walls, calm canyon water, and early morning silence, it feels like entering another world.

If you plan ahead, start early, and respect the landscape, this trip can easily become the highlight of a Page, Arizona road trip.
